Telltale Signs That You’re Not Fully Healed From a Concussion
When you suffer a head injury and are diagnosed with a concussion, you want to maximize your recovery in order to get back to your life. There’s good news—the overwhelming majority (80-90%) of people who suffer a concussion can expect a full recovery within a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, some concussion victims experience ongoing side effects for weeks, months, or even years. The condition is commonly referred to as post-concussion syndrome (PCS). What is it, and how can you tell if you may be suffering from PCS?
What Is Post-Concussion Syndrome?
Post-concussion syndrome is a medical condition that occasionally arises after a bump or blow to the head, where the patient continues to suffer many of the consequences of a concussion long after most victims fully recover. Patients who have had a prior concussion or head injury are at an increased risk of PCS.
What Are the Symptoms of Post-Concussion Syndrome?
With post-concussion syndrome, the symptoms commonly identified with concussion continue to affect the victim long after most concussions would have fully resolved. Most specialists associate PCS with concussion symptoms that persist more than three months after the injury. Common symptoms include:
- Physical indications, such as headaches, nausea or vomiting, extreme sensitivity to noise or light, fatigue, or balance/stability issues
- Emotional responses, including depression, anxiety, uncharacteristic mood swings, or persistent irritability
- Cognitive challenges, from memory or comprehension issues to focus, reasoning, or computation difficulties
How Is PCS Commonly Treated?
As a general rule, post-concussion syndrome is treated with rest and potential changes to activity or lifestyle. As with any head injury, you should avoid strenuous activities, both physical and mental. Your doctor may recommend some light or progressive physical therapy, as well as cognitive therapy or even psychotherapy.
