BOTOX® is the first FDA-approved onabotulinum toxin – a mediation used for therapeutic and cosmetic use. Since 1989, when it was first used to treat strabismus, BOTOX® has been in the spotlight due to the amazing results and safety. BOTOX® relaxes muscles in the face that are responsible for the formation of wrinkles.
Dysport® received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2009. It is very much like BOTOX®, as they are both botulinum type A. While there is some widespread debate on which is the best, BOTOX® carries the strongest brand recognition as a well as the price tag.
What are the differences between the two products?
Results post injection from Dysport® are seen 1-2 days after injection. BOTOX® is reportedly 7-14 days before results are noticed. So if one has an engagement in less than 2 weeks and they wanted look younger for it, Dysport® would be the medication of choice.
This is widely-debated, but not well-studied. Dysport® has been reported by some to last 1-2 days longer, but BOTOX® has also been reported to last 1-2 longer than Dysport®. So there is not any real scientific data currently available giving credence to either of these claims.
BOTOX® carries a higher price than Dysport®, but it has been reported that BOTOX® requires less units to be effective then Dysport®. However, Dysport® reportedly spreads out larger which can be good and bad depending on location injected. While cost is greater with BOTOX®, the amount required is less. 4-6 units in women and 6-8 units in men for corrugators and procerus muscles, where Dysport® requires 10-13 for women and 10-15 for men. Depending on the area of the country, purchase price can be anywhere from $11-$14 a unit for BOTOX® and $7-$10 a unit for Dysport®.
In cosmetics, BOTOX® and Dysport® has several uses. Currently they are only FDA-approved for glabellar complex (between the eyes) and the lateral canthal rhytids (crow’s feet). It is also used to treat hyperhidrosis. However, there are widely accepted off-label uses for BOTOX® in other regions of the face and neck. These include but are not limited to: frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, lower eyelid wrinkles, eyebrow lift, bunny lines, lip lines, gummy smile, marionette lines, chin and neck bands or cords.
At Core Medical Center, we do full evaluation to determine what the patients’ needs are and what we need to do to reach their expectations from treatment. So that means we give you the straight talk about what you should and should not expect, and we listen to your goals and advise you on what procedure is best for those goals based on your appearance. In some cases this could be a any combination of procedures used to reach your desired look.
No Low-Unit Treatments To Cover More Area
We also are very particular about the amount we use in an area. If a patient wants to achieve long-lasting noticeable results, then certain areas require a specific number of units depending on the product. Your results are a direct reflection of the quality of work we do and we want to meet your expectations. So, we do not do individual pricing, but you will find our prices are very close to the national average per unit price for both products.
You Get The Whole Picture Of What’s Best
We will not only make suggestions on where BOTOX® or Dysport® should be used, but will give you other options for treatment for areas we feel BOTOX® or Dysport® alone will not achieve the results you are looking for. This could include fillers, micro-needling and/or PRP.
